Muslim Leaders Warn Akhilesh Yadav: No Votes Without Representation

New Delhi, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is heating up as the 2027 assembly elections approach. Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), is facing criticism for failing to include Muslim representation among his nominees for the Rajya Sabha. Maulana Sajid Rashidi, president of the All India Imam Association, has made it clear that Yadav could face dire consequences at the polls if he does not address this issue.

In a recent interview in New Delhi, Rashidi emphasized that both the Samajwadi Party and Congress need to actively engage with Muslim voters. He stated that until they announce a Muslim candidate for chief minister, any seat-sharing discussions will ultimately lead to failure. Rashidi urged Muslim lawmakers within the SP to recognize their vital role in the party’s success, asserting that their votes should result in a Muslim chief minister.

Highlighting the lack of Muslim candidates in Yadav’s recent Rajya Sabha nominations, Rashidi criticized the SP leader’s commitment to the community. Despite winning elections with Muslim support, Yadav’s actions suggest a growing distance from Muslim voters, he argued. Rashidi pointed out that Muslims constitute 22 to 23 percent of the electorate in Uttar Pradesh, compared to the Yadav community’s 8 to 11 percent. He asserted that if the latter has had multiple chief ministers, it is now time for Muslims to have their turn.

Addressing comments made by yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Rashidi suggested that Ramdev’s recent statements are merely a tactic to boost his own publicity. He also responded to remarks from Sunil Ambecker, a spokesperson for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, regarding the Muslim population, urging for scrutiny of such claims.

In a positive note, Rashidi praised Indian Captain Smita Machhar for her bravery in averting a disaster on a Flydubai flight, commending her for her selfless actions. He called for the government to recognize her efforts with an award, highlighting the courage and capability of Indian citizens.

As the political dynamics shift, it remains to be seen how these developments will influence voter sentiment in the lead-up to the elections.
