Shimla, 19 August (Kiran News). Continuous monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh have disrupted daily life, with incidents of landslides reported at various places. In the capital Shimla, a major landslide occurred late Monday night near Ramchandra Chowk on the road from Navbahar to Raj Bhavan. Debris and fallen trees blocked the road completely, halting traffic. Three to four nearby buildings were also affected by the landslide. As a precaution, the administration evacuated these buildings and shifted around 35 to 40 people to safe locations. These buildings were government quarters belonging to different departments.

Similarly, in Mandi district’s Paddar sub-division, heavy rainfall during the night and this morning has caused significant destruction in Choharghati. The two worst-affected panchayats, Shilhbuddhani and Taraswan, suffered major losses. Six footbridges, one vehicle, one shop, and hundreds of bighas of private land were swept away by the strong current. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. Panchayat heads stated that the heavy rains caused streams to overflow, and people saved themselves by taking shelter in safe places. The loss of hundreds of bighas of land has caused damage worth crores of rupees to farmers and orchardists.

SDM Paddar Surjit Singh and teams from the Public Works and Revenue Departments have been sent to the affected areas. Given the situation, a holiday has been declared today in all educational institutions in the Paddar sub-division.

In Kullu district’s Lagghati, a cloudburst on Tuesday morning damaged two shops and a motorcycle. A pedestrian bridge in the Sarvari area was also damaged. The administration has started relief and rescue operations. Due to the conditions, all educational institutions in Kullu and Banjar sub-divisions have been closed for the day.

Amid heavy rain, water continues to be released from the Pong Dam in Kangra district. As of 8 am Tuesday, the water level in the dam was recorded at 1383.02 feet. According to the BBMB administration, all six turbines are operational, releasing 17,456 cusecs of water, while 42,379 cusecs have been discharged from the spillway gates, making a total release of 59,835 cusecs. From Wednesday, this volume will be increased to 75,000 cusecs. The administration has alerted officials in the lower areas and appealed to people not to go near riverbanks.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in the state till 25 August. Continuous rainfall is causing the risk of landslides, cloudbursts, and flooding in rivers and streams.
