New Delhi, August 30: Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan has voiced his worries regarding the deteriorating health of Imran Khan, the captain who led the nation to victory in the 1992 ODI World Cup. He has urged the government and prison authorities to ensure immediate and adequate medical care for the 73-year-old former Prime Minister.
Moin Khan was a crucial member of the team that clinched the World Cup title. On Saturday, he released an emotional video message on the social media platform ‘X’, calling for the cricket community to unite in support of Imran Khan.
Imran has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August 2023 on corruption charges, which he has consistently denied. Moin stated, “As you all know, our captain Imran Khan is currently in Adiala Jail, and his condition is quite serious. I once again appeal to the authorities, the Pakistan government, and everyone managing Adiala Jail. I request that the rights of our captain be respected – as a former Prime Minister and a citizen of Pakistan, he has the right to medical care. His needs must be addressed. Additionally, I urge other cricketers to come forward and raise their voices in support of him. Imran Khan has made significant contributions to Pakistan cricket, and we all learned a lot from him during his era.”
Moin’s appeal follows a similar call from legendary batsman Javed Miandad and comes amid growing global concern. Recently, 22 former international captains, including those from India, England, West Indies, and New Zealand, wrote an open letter to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, demanding proper healthcare and constitutional protection for Imran.
The former captains received public backing from Australia’s Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins. This letter was penned after a previous one by 14 former captains in February, which went unanswered by the Pakistan government.
Attention to Imran’s health intensified when the Supreme Court of Pakistan recently ordered his admission to Islamabad’s Shifa Hospital. Instead, he was taken to the government PIMS hospital and then swiftly returned to jail.
This political situation has also impacted the ongoing Test match at Lord’s, where the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a formal complaint against Sky Sports. The complaint arose after the channel aired an interview with Imran’s sons, Suleman and Qasim Khan, during the lunch break on the first day.
