CBI Arrests Srinagar Municipal Officer in Bribery Case

A Srinagar municipal officer was arrested by the CBI for demanding a bribe to allow home repairs. The agency urges citizens to report corruption.

Srinagar, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a ward officer from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in connection with a bribery case. The officer, identified as Sheikh Jameel Mohammad, was taken into custody on October 15, 2026.

According to a CBI press release, the arrest followed a complaint alleging that the officer solicited a bribe of ₹10,000 to permit minor repair work at a complainant’s residence. Acting on this complaint, the CBI set a trap and caught the officer red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the bribe.

The accused has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. In light of this incident, the CBI has urged citizens in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to report any instances of corruption or demands for bribes by government officials. Individuals can file complaints or provide information by visiting the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Bureau office in Srinagar or by calling 9419900977.

The CBI holds full jurisdiction to investigate crimes in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has affirmed the agency’s authority to conduct investigations in the region, which is supported by general consent previously granted by the state government and the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act of 1946.

Following the implementation of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, the CBI can operate without hindrance, registering cases and conducting investigations under central laws, including the Central Vigilance Act.
