Silchar, March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a strong critique against the Congress party during the inauguration of the Shillong-Silchar Corridor. He stated, “Where the Congress’s thinking ends, our work begins.”
While addressing the event in Assam’s Silchar, Modi emphasized that for decades, Congress governments kept the North-East disconnected from both Delhi and the heart of the nation. He accused the party of neglecting the region, saying, “The BJP’s double-engine government has connected the North-East in such a way that it is now a focal point of discussion. Today, the North-East is becoming a bridge linking India with Southeast Asia.”
Targeting Congress further, Modi remarked, “Just as Congress abandoned the North-East, it played a significant role in the deterioration of the Barak Valley. When India gained independence, Congress allowed boundaries to be drawn that severed the Barak Valley’s connection to the sea. Once recognized as a trade route and industrial hub, the Barak Valley lost its strength. Despite decades of Congress rule post-independence, little was done for its development.”
He announced the groundbreaking of the Shillong-Silchar Corridor, which will cost ₹24,000 crore, stating, “This corridor ends decades of waiting for the people of the North-East. It will connect Silchar with Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura.”
Modi reiterated the BJP’s commitment to prioritizing development in areas that have lagged behind, saying, “While Congress viewed border areas as the last villages of the country, we see them as the first. This is why we initiated the next phase of the ‘Vibrant Village Program’ from Cachar district, ensuring improvements in many villages of the Barak Valley.”
On farmers’ issues, Modi criticized Congress, asserting, “The double-engine government is continuously taking steps for farmers’ welfare. Just last Friday, I released the next installment of the Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme from Guwahati. Despite Congress ruling for so many years, they failed to provide even a single rupee.”
He also pointed out that Congress had entangled the youth of Assam in cycles of violence and terrorism, turning the state into a “divide and rule” laboratory. Today, he claimed, the youth of Assam have a sky full of opportunities ahead of them.
