Moderate Rain Expected in Western Ghats and Northern Coastal Tamil Nadu Until August 16

Chennai, August 11: The Regional Meteorological Center has issued a warning for moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in districts adjacent to the Western Ghats and parts of Northern Coastal Tamil Nadu.

According to the weather department, a low-pressure area, referred to as a ‘trough,’ has formed at lower atmospheric levels over the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. This has created favorable conditions for rainfall across various parts of the state. Moderate rain is expected during the day in several areas of the Western Ghats and Northern Coastal Tamil Nadu, along with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in some regions.

The Regional Meteorological Center indicated that this spell of rain in the Western Ghats is likely to continue for several days, with moderate rainfall expected in some areas until August 16. Residents in regions prone to thunderstorms are advised to remain cautious during lightning and strong winds. Additionally, temperatures are expected to rise in some parts of Northern Interior Tamil Nadu.

The weather department noted that maximum temperatures in the area could increase by up to three degrees Celsius by August 14. In Chennai and surrounding areas, partly cloudy skies are anticipated during the day, with conditions becoming favorable for rain by evening or night. Moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely in some parts of the city and suburbs. This forecast comes after significant rainfall was recorded in various locations across Tamil Nadu in the past 24 hours.

As per data recorded until 8:30 AM on Monday, the highest rainfall of 5 cm was reported in Vediyareendal, Shivganga district. Meanwhile, Thoothukudi district’s Tiruchendur, Virudhunagar district’s Aruppukottai, and Madurai district’s Sholavandan each recorded 4 cm of rain during the same period. The ongoing rainfall is expected to provide some relief from the heat experienced in parts of the state, although interior districts may still experience high temperatures during the day in the coming days. The weather conditions are expected to remain unstable, especially in the Western Ghats region, as the low-pressure trough continues to affect Tamil Nadu.
