Moderate Rain Expected in Chennai, Heavy Showers Forecasted in Western Ghats Until July 23

Chennai, July 18: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rainfall in Chennai this evening. Meanwhile, heavy rains are expected in the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu throughout the week, accompanied by strong winds.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), a low-pressure system stretching from the southwest Bay of Bengal to the northern Lakshadweep region is currently influencing weather conditions in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas.

This weather system is likely to enhance rainfall activity, particularly in the Western Ghats, where moderate rain is expected to continue with strong winds until July 23.

The RMC noted that this rainfall could benefit several hilly and nearby districts, which have experienced intermittent rain in recent days. Given the current weather situation, continued rainfall is anticipated in these areas over the next few days. Moderate rain is also expected in the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday.

The weather department indicated that there are currently no signs of widespread heavy rainfall across most parts of the state. However, sporadic rain and cloud cover may provide temporary relief from the prevailing hot and humid conditions in some regions.

The weather forecast for Chennai suggests partly cloudy skies with a chance of light rain in the evening or at night. While light rain may occur, daytime temperatures are expected to remain hot and humid.

Maximum temperatures are projected to be around 38 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are expected to hover near seasonal averages.

Meanwhile, the heatwave is likely to persist in the interior regions of Tamil Nadu. The RMC has warned that maximum temperatures in these areas could be 3 degrees Celsius above normal until July 21. Coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Puducherry, and Karaikal, is expected to experience temperatures close to seasonal averages.

The weather department has advised residents to stay informed about weather forecasts, especially in districts where strong winds and intermittent rain are anticipated.
