Mumbai Crime Branch Interrogates Professor in IIT Bombay Student Suicide Case

Mumbai, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : The Mumbai Crime Branch has conducted an extensive eight-hour interrogation of Professor Surya Narayan Dula as part of the investigation into the suicide of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode. This questioning follows allegations made by Wakode’s parents, who claim that Professor Dula harassed their son.

During the interrogation, the Crime Branch focused on the events leading up to Wakode’s death and specific interactions he had with Professor Dula. The professor has denied all allegations against him.

Sources indicate that the Crime Branch is expected to summon the director of IIT Bombay, Shirish Kedar, to provide a statement soon. Additionally, police are reviewing CCTV footage from the examination hall to gather crucial information regarding Wakode’s activities prior to his death. So far, statements have been taken from around 50 individuals, including Wakode’s parents and classmates.

In a related development, Wakode’s parents have been on a hunger strike at Azad Maidan for the past six days, demanding the arrest of those named in the FIR. They are specifically calling for the arrest of Professor Dula and Director Kedar, insisting that they will continue their protest until their demands are met. Previously, the Powai police registered a case against Professor Dula for allegedly inciting suicide based on a complaint filed by Wakode’s father, Ravindra.

Wakode, a second-year B.Tech student in the Energy Science and Engineering department, was found hanging in his hostel room on the evening of September 18. This tragic incident reportedly occurred just hours after he was caught using his mobile phone during mid-semester exams. Initial reports suggested that he had uploaded an exam question paper to an artificial intelligence platform using his phone. However, the institution later declined to provide further details about the incident.
