Mizorams Barabi-Sairang Rail Line: A Transformative Project, Says Governor

Aizawl, March 28: Mizoram’s Governor, General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), has hailed the 51.38-kilometer Barabi-Sairang rail line as a transformative project for the state’s hilly terrain.

In a media interaction, the Governor noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the rail line on September 13, 2025. This development is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and economic growth in Mizoram.

He also shared plans to extend the project approximately 200 kilometers southward to Zorinpui. This extension will connect with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, facilitating access to Paletwa and the Sittwe port in Myanmar.

The Governor emphasized that improved connectivity would bring about socio-economic changes not only in Mizoram but across the entire northeastern region and the country.

Addressing border security concerns, General Singh acknowledged Mizoram’s vulnerability to drug trafficking due to its proximity to international borders. However, he assured that the government remains vigilant and committed to curbing illegal cross-border activities.

He highlighted the positive role of churches, the Young Mizo Association, and other NGOs in maintaining social discipline and harmony in the predominantly tribal and Christian state.

The Governor underscored Mizoram’s strategic significance, noting that despite its small population and limited geographical area, the state is located at the tri-junction of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, making it crucial to India’s ‘Act East Policy.’

He remarked that the amicable relations with neighboring countries contribute to peace along the borders, resulting in fewer major incidents.

Reflecting on the state’s history, he mentioned that despite past unrest, the Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986 laid the foundation for lasting peace and stability.

He also pointed out that Mizoram is one of the most literate states in India, officially recognized as the first fully literate state, and is often referred to as the ‘Ginger Capital of India.’

The Governor commended the rapid development across various sectors in the state.
