Mithila Makhana Takes Flight: First Shipment of 18 Metric Tons Exported to Australia

Patna, August 8: Bihar’s GI-tagged Mithila Makhana has achieved a significant milestone in the global market. For the first time, an 18 metric ton shipment of this GI-tagged product has been exported to Australia via sea route.

Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary hailed this achievement as a testament to the hard work of the state’s farmers and the growing global recognition of Bihar’s agricultural products. On Saturday, he reposted a message from Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the social media platform X, stating that Mithila Makhana has taken a global flight from the land of Mithilanchal to the markets of Australia.

CM Chaudhary noted that the export of the first 18 metric ton shipment of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana is a proud indicator of the farmers’ efforts and the increasing global recognition of agricultural products from Bihar. This shipment, sourced directly from farmers in Darbhanga, provided them with approximately 18% higher profits compared to market prices.

He emphasized that this achievement marks a significant step towards the growing global acceptance of Bihar’s agricultural products and the prosperity of its farmers. He described it as an encouraging accomplishment for the agricultural sector in Bihar.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, in his post on X, stated that India’s GI-tagged Mithila Makhana has achieved another significant milestone in the global market. With the support of APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority), the first 18 metric ton shipment of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana has been exported to Australia via sea route.

According to Goyal, this shipment was purchased directly from farmers in Darbhanga, allowing them to gain nearly 18% more than the market price. He highlighted this as a crucial step towards enhancing the global reach of Indian agricultural products and providing farmers with better market access.

The GI tag has strengthened the unique identity of Mithila Makhana in the global market. The export of this first large shipment to Australia is seen as a gateway to new international markets for Bihar’s Makhana producers.
