New Delhi, August 22: Australian left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc has surpassed South African legend Dale Steyn in the all-time Test wicket tally. Starc now stands as the tenth most successful bowler in Test cricket history. He achieved this milestone during the Test match between Australia and Bangladesh that commenced on Saturday in South Mackay.
Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl first. Starc’s fiery bowling dismantled Bangladesh’s top order. In just 10 overs, he bowled 6 maidens, conceding only 12 runs while claiming 6 wickets. With his fifth wicket, he overtook Steyn’s record.
At 36 years old, Starc has now taken 441 wickets in 107 Test matches across 205 innings. He has claimed 5 or more wickets in a single innings 19 times and has taken 10 or more wickets in a match on 3 occasions. His best bowling figures stand at 7 wickets for 58 runs.
Ahead of Starc is West Indies great Courtney Walsh, who holds the record with 519 wickets from 132 Tests. It remains to be seen if Starc can break this record.
Dale Steyn, who played from 2004 to 2019, took 439 wickets in 93 Test matches. He has now dropped to the 11th position in the list of the most successful Test bowlers.
The record for the most wickets in Test cricket belongs to Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who took 800 wickets in 133 Tests from 1992 to 2010. Australia’s Shane Warne follows with 708 wickets from 145 Tests between 1992 and 2007. England’s James Anderson ranks third with 704 wickets in 188 Tests from 2003 to 2024.
