Dubai, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women’s cricket team showcased an impressive performance, clinching the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 title by defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final. However, in a significant move, the team declined to accept the trophy from Mohsin Nakvi, the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
In an exclusive interview, BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia explained that, similar to the men’s team, the women’s squad also refused to accept the trophy from Nakvi. He highlighted that the trophy issue has become contentious, particularly following the events in Pahalgam in April 2025, which altered the dynamics of cricketing relations.
Saikia noted, “After the Pahalgam incident, there was immense pressure from the citizens of our country to avoid any relations with the neighboring country, including playing cricket against them. However, our government mandates participation in multinational tournaments against all countries. Following this policy, we are competing in all such events.”
He further elaborated on the BCCI’s stance, stating, “This does not mean we will accept all conditions. We cannot accept a trophy from a leader of a country that has historically had strained relations with us and has acted against our interests. Our men’s team had previously declined the Asia Cup trophy, and our women’s team has followed suit.”
Saikia commended the Indian women’s cricket team for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament, expressing pride in their achievements. He noted that women’s cricket is rapidly gaining prominence in the country. In the final match, India batted first, scoring 183 runs for five wickets in 20 overs, while Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 111 runs.
