Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Under House Arrest Amid Ongoing Restrictions in Kashmir

Srinagar, March 6: Senior religious leader and chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq announced on Friday that authorities have placed him under house arrest as restrictions continue across the Kashmir Valley.

In a post on the social media platform X, Mirwaiz Umar stated, “Restrictions are still in place in the Valley, and they have intensified on this Friday during the holy month of Ramadan. I have also been placed under house arrest. During these days, when thousands gather in mosques for prayers and guidance, the pulpit of Jamia Masjid remains silent, and all lanes leading to the mosque are barricaded. This is very sad and unfortunate.”

Commenting on the U.S.-Israel actions against Iran, he said, “The suffering in Kashmir today is not solely due to these restrictions. Muslims worldwide are distressed and deeply troubled by the Israeli and American attacks. Israel and the U.S. aim to reshape this region for their own benefit, willing to go to any lengths, as evidenced by the brutal assassination of a national leader and great spiritual figure, Ayatollah Khamenei, and the attacks on a free nation like Iran, plunging the entire region into crisis and sorrow.”

He noted that people across Jammu and Kashmir, from the Valley to Jammu, Ladakh, and Kargil, have condemned these attacks, showing solidarity as one voice above divisions.

He further stated, “The Ummah cannot be divided in such moments. When injustice befalls one part, the pain is felt throughout the body. As Mirwaiz, I stand in heartfelt solidarity with the people of Iran, the Palestinians, and all those suffering from these attacks in this region and beyond. Every human life is precious, and war and violence are man-made calamities that cost precious lives. May Allah protect everyone, grant patience to the mourners, deliver swift justice to the oppressors, and free those who endure oppression.”

Meanwhile, restrictions in Kashmir remain in effect, with Friday prayers conducted in congregation across all districts, towns, and villages. No reports of any untoward incidents have emerged from the Valley.
