Srinagar, August 21: Senior religious leader and chief cleric of Jammu and Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, delivered the Friday sermon at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. He emphasized that this historic pulpit has always stood for the rights of the people.
Mirwaiz Farooq noted that after nearly two weeks of restrictions, he was once again among the people. During the lockdown, he was prevented from delivering the Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid and was also denied the opportunity to address the gathering at Naqshband Sahib.
He expressed that every opportunity to be with the people is regarded as a “blessing from Allah,” as the restrictions and attempts to silence the pulpit’s voice seem to be part of the state’s policy. This is a time for patience and to continue good work in any possible way.
The Mirwaiz stated that for generations, this pulpit has played a crucial role in educating the people and shaping society on religious and moral grounds. It has helped raise awareness and understanding among people not only about their rights but also their duties.
He added that whenever needed, this pulpit has become a strong voice, presenting their concerns and advocating for their aspirations. It has promoted peaceful coexistence among communities and has firmly raised its voice for the rights of minorities.
Mirwaiz emphasized that activities have always been peaceful, principled, and dignified, focusing on real issues rather than personal grievances and promoting dialogue over confrontation.
He concluded, “Insha’Allah, whenever the opportunity arises, it will continue to do so. This is the legacy of my ancestors and the shared heritage of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
