
Guwahati, May 24: In a vibrant celebration of fitness, youth engagement, and India’s growing sports ambitions, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, today led a special edition of ‘Fit India Sunday on Cycle’ at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati.
This event, organized in collaboration with the Regional Centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Guwahati, marked the 75th nationwide edition of ‘Fit India Sunday on Cycle,’ celebrating India’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad. Under the banner of ‘Commonwealth Games in India 2030,’ athletes, students, cyclists, fitness enthusiasts, and citizens came together, showcasing national pride and community participation.
Addressing the gathering, Raksha Khadse emphasized the significance of the ‘Fit India Movement’ envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the increasing culture of fitness and sports participation across the country.
Khadse stated, “The ‘Sunday on Cycle’ event in Guwahati is organized to celebrate the Commonwealth Games, as we all know that India is set to host them. Through the Ministry of Sports, the ‘Sunday on Cycle’ initiative is being held every Sunday across the nation. The ‘Fit India Movement’ was initiated by our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.”
He praised the participation of youth, athletes, and institutions despite adverse weather conditions and thanked the teams from IIT Guwahati and SAI for successfully organizing the event.
The Guwahati edition featured a massive cycling rally through the IIT Guwahati campus, symbolizing India’s collective journey towards a fitter and stronger sports nation. The event included yoga sessions, cultural activities, and a special ‘Thang-Ta’ martial arts demonstration, showcasing the rich sports and cultural heritage of the Northeast. Olympian and Commonwealth Games medalist Jayant Talukdar and Commonwealth Games medalist Sushila Devi Likmabam also participated, inspiring young athletes with their journeys and experiences representing India on international platforms.
A special exhibition themed around the Commonwealth Games was also held, showcasing India’s sports achievements over the past decade. It highlighted progress under the ‘Khelo India Mission,’ the expansion of sports infrastructure, and the growing sports ecosystem in the country. Winners of the ‘Commonwealth Games Open Quiz’ and painting competition, organized by SAI Guwahati, were honored during the event by Raksha Khadse and other dignitaries.
The 75th edition of ‘Fit India Sunday on Cycle’ saw participation from over 8,000 locations across the country. It was celebrated as a symbol of India’s emergence as a global sports power ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2030.
Initiated under the ‘Fit India Movement,’ ‘Sunday on Cycle’ has become one of India’s largest community fitness initiatives, promoting cycling and a healthy, active lifestyle among citizens of all ages.
