New Delhi, May 24: On the occasion of Commonwealth Day, Delhi Government Minister Ashish Sood participated in the 75th edition of the ‘Fit India Sunday on Cycle’ event held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. A large number of youth took to their bicycles on Sunday morning, promoting the message of fitness.
During the event, Minister Sood emphasized that bicycles symbolize freedom from childhood. He recalled how he would run around excitedly upon receiving a bicycle. Today, bicycles represent patriotism and self-reliance in the context of the West Asia crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi encourages everyone to cycle for 30 minutes daily, suggesting it as a healthier alternative to medication.
Cycling is not only essential for fitness but also crucial for the environment in Delhi and across the country. It plays a significant role in conserving petrol and diesel. Bicycles provide everyone with an opportunity to contribute to the nation.
In a conversation with the media, Minister Sood stated, “The Fit India campaign and ‘Sunday on Cycle’ is a unique initiative by the Government of India. Prime Minister Modi continuously urges people to maintain their health. This initiative is part of that effort.”
Notably, the Fit India Sunday on Cycle is a nationwide fitness campaign launched by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in December 2024. It promotes cycling as a sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally friendly exercise with numerous health benefits.
Adopting cycling as a form of exercise not only improves heart health and mental well-being but also helps tackle the growing obesity problem among youth. It is a simple yet effective way to stay active, reduce stress, and connect with nature. The campaign received recognition and appreciation during the 117th episode of Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat.’ Approximately 200,000 participants have joined the initiative across 4,600 locations, including schoolchildren, doctors, police personnel, government employees, and National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers. Anyone can participate in this program by registering easily on the My Bharat and Fit India website or mobile app and can create their own events.
