Solar Project

Meridian Energy has officially signed agreements with Nova Energy to form a joint venture (JV) aimed at building and operating the 400MW Te Rahui solar farm at Rangitāiki, near Taupō, New Zealand.

The new JV, which is equally owned by both companies, has already secured NZ$300 million (US$177 million) in financing for the first 200MW phase of the project. Under the agreement, both partners will share the offtake: Meridian will purchase the farm’s entire electricity output, while Nova will enter a contract for difference covering half of the electricity generated.

Project Details and Timeline

  • Resource Consent: Nova secured resource consent for the Te Rahui solar farm in April 2024.

  • Capacity: Once both phases are operational, the facility is expected to supply electricity to around 100,000 households.

  • Operational Dates: The first phase is set to begin producing power by mid-2026, with the project expected to reach full capacity by mid-2027.

  • Second Phase: No financial commitment has been made yet regarding phase two, but both companies are working to advance the development.

Strategic Importance and Future Plans

Meridian chief executive Mike Roan described the project as a significant undertaking, highlighting the commercial benefits of shared investment and output. “Te Rahui is a big undertaking and sharing the investment and offtake makes strong commercial sense for both parties, while the project will also benefit home and business customers by further strengthening security of supply,” he said. Roan added that Meridian is excited to partner with Nova on Te Rahui.

The solar project aligns with Meridian’s broader goal of launching seven new renewable projects by 2030. This push follows the recent completion of the Harapaki wind farm and the Ruakākā battery energy storage system (BESS). Other projects in Meridian’s pipeline include:

  • A new BESS in Manawatū,

  • A wind farm at Mount Munro,

  • A solar farm next to the Ruakākā BESS,

  • Refurbishment of the Te Rere Hau wind farm.

Currently, construction is underway at the Ruakākā solar farm, and the Mount Munro wind farm is in the detailed design phase.

Roan emphasized Meridian’s commitment, saying, “Having invested more than $1 billion in the past five years, we have a further $2 billion planned for investment over the next three years. These projects will add over 1,000MW of new capacity, a five percent increase to the electricity system.”

Partnerships and Construction

Beyond its own projects, Meridian is supporting other developers through agreements like this one with Nova and a power purchase agreement with Harmony Energy/First Renewables for their 150MW Tauhei solar farm. The Te Rahui JV, first announced in December 2024, has appointed Beon Energy to handle construction and initial operations and maintenance.
