Mendis Shines with Half-Century as Sri Lanka Posts 147 Against West Indies in First T20

Kingston, June 12: The first match of the three-match T20 series between West Indies and Sri Lanka took place at Sabina Park in Kingston. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 147 runs, losing 9 wickets in the process. Kamindu Mendis played a crucial role, scoring a half-century.

Winning the toss, the Sri Lankan team opted to bat first. They got off to a steady start, with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis contributing to a 43-run opening partnership. Nissanka was bowled out by Jason Holder after scoring 18 runs off 14 balls. Meanwhile, Lasith Croospulle, who came in at number three, was dismissed for a golden duck.

Pawan Ratnayake also struggled with the bat, managing only 4 runs before being dismissed. Captain Mendis faced 23 balls, hitting 2 fours and 3 sixes to score 36 runs. Dasun Shanaka had a tough time, scoring 22 runs off 23 balls.

Despite losing wickets at one end, Kamindu Mendis emerged as the team’s savior. He played a strong innings, facing 39 balls and scoring 51 runs, including 4 fours and 2 sixes. However, Sri Lanka’s wickets continued to fall, and they could only reach a total of 147 runs in their 20 overs, adding just 6 runs while losing 2 wickets in the final over.

In bowling, West Indies’ Jason Holder and Shemar Joseph were impressive, each taking 3 wickets. Roston Chase also claimed one wicket. Earlier, Sri Lanka had won the first ODI match against West Indies by 41 runs, while the second and third ODIs were abandoned due to rain.
