Mumbai, 10 January – Meg Lanning, captain of the UP Warriors, has climbed to the second spot on the list of highest run-scorers in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), surpassing Australia’s Ellyse Perry.
Since 2023, Lanning has played 28 WPL matches, amassing 982 runs at an average of 39.28, including nine half-centuries. Perry, on the other hand, has scored 972 runs in 25 matches with an impressive average of 64.80. Leading the chart is England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has scored 1,031 runs in 30 matches, including eight half-centuries.
Sciver-Brunt remains the only player in the tournament’s history to have crossed the 1,000-run mark, a feat credited to her outstanding campaign in 2025. During that season, she became the first and only cricketer to score over 500 runs in a single WPL season, leading Mumbai Indians to victory.
In the second match of WPL 2026 held at DY Patil Sports Academy on Saturday, Gujarat Giants scored 207 runs for four wickets, powered by captain Ashley Gardner’s half-century. Gardner played a lively innings of 65 runs off 41 balls, hitting three sixes and six boundaries. Anushka Sharma contributed 44 runs, while Sophie Devine added 38 runs to the total.
In response, UP Warriors could manage only 197 runs for eight wickets in their allotted overs. Phoebe Litchfield top-scored for the Warriors with 78 runs, while captain Meg Lanning added 30 runs.
This match marked the third instance in WPL history where the combined team total crossed 400 runs. Previously, in 2025, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriors combined for 438 runs. Another high-scoring match of 403 runs occurred in 2025 between Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Vadodara.
