Mumbai, May 9: Veteran actress Meenakshi Seshadri reminisced about her iconic film Damini as it celebrates its 33rd anniversary.
In a recent social media post, Seshadri shared a delightful behind-the-scenes moment from the filming of the beloved song “Jabse Tumko Dekha Hai Sanam.” She highlighted how the late actor Rishi Kapoor made a challenging shot much easier.
During the initial shot of the song, Seshadri had to balance herself on top of a moving car amidst the lush greenery of Mysore. She described the experience as almost stunt-like, noting the difficulty of appearing relaxed and romantic on camera while maintaining her balance.
Seshadri praised Kapoor’s calm driving skills and the excellent coordination with the camera crew, which allowed her to remain steady during the difficult scene.
In her post, she wrote, “The celebration of Damini’s 33rd anniversary continues. ‘Damini’ was a serious and emotional drama, but it also featured incredibly sweet and memorable music. ‘Jabse Tumko Dekha Hai Sanam’ is a lovely and timeless tune filmed in the beautiful greenery of Mysore.”
She added, “In the initial shot of this song, the heroine is shown sitting on top of a moving car. It was almost like a stunt shot, and it was quite challenging to look comfortable and romantic while keeping my balance. Rishi Kapoor showcased fantastic driving skills, handling the car in such a way that I could stay steady, while also maintaining great coordination with the camera crew.”
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Damini was released in 1993 and featured a stellar cast including Meenakshi Seshadri, Rishi Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Rohini Hattangadi.
The film revolves around a simple yet principled woman named Damini, who struggles to bring justice for her domestic helper after witnessing a serious crime committed by her brother-in-law and his friends while under the influence. Eventually, her in-laws also side with the criminals.
Seshadri’s portrayal of the character Damini is considered one of the strongest female roles of that era. The film is also remembered for Sunny Deol’s powerful courtroom scenes and famous dialogues like “Tareekh pe tareekh…” and “Yeh haath jab uth jaata hai toh aadmi uthta nahi, uth jaata hai.”
