New Delhi, June 17: French star player Kylian Mbappe delivered an outstanding performance in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. He scored two goals, leading France to a 3-1 victory against Senegal. With this achievement, Mbappe has surpassed Lionel Messi in a significant statistic.
Mbappe now ranks third in the all-time list of top scorers in FIFA World Cup history. He has netted 14 goals in just 15 matches during this mega event. In contrast, Argentina’s Messi has scored 13 goals in 26 matches. Additionally, Mbappe has become the highest goal scorer for France in World Cup history.
The record for the most goals in World Cup history is held by former German player Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals in 24 matches. Brazilian legend Ronaldo follows closely, having scored 15 goals in 19 matches. If Mbappe maintains his impressive form throughout the tournament, he could emerge as the top scorer in this World Cup.
In the match against Senegal, Mbappe opened the scoring in the 66th minute, converting a brilliant pass from Michael Olise. He later added his second goal in the dying moments of the match with a long-range strike, marking his 14th goal in FIFA World Cup history. Mbappe had also showcased his talent in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he won the Golden Boot with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final.
