New Delhi, 30 December. Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani has expressed deep concern over the brutal incident in Bangladesh and the rising communal violence in India. Through a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he strongly condemned the incident in Bangladesh and highlighted the growing cases of mob lynching and religious hatred within the country.
In his post, Maulana Arshad Madani stated, “What happened in Bangladesh is extremely deplorable. It is not just a murder but an act of barbarity and cruelty. No amount of condemnation is enough. Islam does not permit such acts under any circumstances. Those involved have not only violated Islamic teachings but also tarnished the image of Islam. Such individuals must be given the strictest punishment.”
He further said that religious extremism and hatred are destroying India as well. The communal elements’ actions against the Christian community during Christmas cannot be justified in any form. These attacks on churches and attempts to stop Christians from celebrating their festival are direct assaults on the religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.
Maulana Madani also pointed out recent incidents of communal violence within India. He mentioned the brutal beating of a Muslim cloth vendor in Nalanda, Bihar, after questioning his name and religion, which led to his death in hospital. A similar case from Kerala involved a Dalit youth from Chhattisgarh being killed after being labeled as Bangladeshi. Recently, in Odisha, three Muslim labourers from West Bengal were victims of mob lynching, resulting in one death and two undergoing treatment.
He expressed sadness that neither the government nor any cabinet minister has condemned these incidents. The extensive media coverage on the Bangladesh incident contrasts sharply with the silence over mob lynchings in India, which he described as deeply regrettable. Maulana Madani questioned the double standards, asking, “What should such behaviour be called? Surely, this is not the India envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi, Sheikhul Hind, Motilal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and our elders.”
