Tsunami waves up to 13 feet observed on Russian coast; U.S., Japan, and others on alert
A powerful earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale struck Russia’s eastern Kamchatka region on Wednesday morning, triggering a widespread tsunami warning that extends to multiple countries including the United States and Japan. The tremors were strong enough to generate massive tsunami waves, with heights recorded up to 13 feet along the Russian coastline. Evacuation efforts have been initiated in affected areas.

Following the earthquake, Russian government minister Lebedev urged people to stay away from water bodies. Meanwhile, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System has issued an alert, warning of possible tsunami waves over the next three hours. According to the advisory, waves as high as 10 feet could hit the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and Russian coasts.

Authorities have also warned that tsunami waves up to 3 feet could reach the shores of the Philippines, Chuuk, Kosrae, Marshall Islands, and Palau. Additionally, coastal regions of South Korea, North Korea, and Taiwan may experience waves over 1 foot in height. Japan’s Meteorological Department has issued a caution that waves measuring around 3.28 feet may arrive at coastal areas by 1 PM local time.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov released a video statement describing the earthquake as “extremely serious and powerful.” He confirmed that there have been no reports of casualties so far.
