New Delhi, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian men’s kabaddi team captain, Sunil Kumar, is optimistic about the team’s readiness for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. He credits an extensive training program for helping players develop their combinations, refine strategies, and enhance individual skills.
At 27, Sunil leads a squad that includes seasoned players and emerging talents. He was part of the team that clinched gold in the previous Asian Games. This time, he will guide a 12-member roster featuring four players from the gold-winning squad in Hangzhou: Sunil himself, Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar, and Pawan Sahrawat.
The team also includes notable players from the Pro Kabaddi League, such as Ashu Malik, Jaideep Dahiya, Devank Dalal, and Rahul Sethpal, while Ayaan Lohchab represents the younger generation. Sunil noted that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Kabaddi Federation initiated the training camp six to eight months prior, allowing ample time for players to work on their combinations and strategies.
In comments to SAI media, Sunil stated, “Our preparation has been excellent because our federation and SAI started the camp well in advance. We have developed a solid plan for our team combinations and strategies. We first practiced in SAI Bengaluru, then trained in Bellary, and finally held our camp in SAI Gandhinagar.”
The long preparation period has also helped players better understand their roles and the team’s strategic mindset. India aims to continue its impressive kabaddi legacy at the Asian Games. The men’s team won gold in the last edition, and Sunil, Arjun, Aslam, and Pawan were integral to that success.
Sunil emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, “Our senior players have given the team a distinct identity and have secured numerous gold medals for India. We want to maintain that legacy and add another gold medal to our tally, following the path laid by our legends.” He highlighted the strength of the team in both raiding and defense, noting, “Victory cannot come from just one player’s effort. This time, our raiding and defense teams are both very strong. We have some of the best players in kabaddi, whether they are raiders or defenders.”
He added, “We have completed our preparations. We have worked on our strategy, team combinations, fitness, and individual skills. Now, we need to implement all of these effectively during the competition. It won’t be enough for just one player to try. Everyone must contribute. Our raiders, defenders, and all-rounders need to work together as a team.” The kabaddi competition will take place at the Tokai Citizen Gymnasium in Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture. India’s campaign kicks off on September 21, with the final scheduled for September 26.
