Washington, August 1: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has intensified his campaign against the International Criminal Court (ICC). He stated that the Trump administration has launched an international initiative to limit the ICC’s influence. Rubio also highlighted the growing support from pro-American governments in the Western Hemisphere and diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.
Rubio described the ICC as an institution that asserts authority over citizens of non-member states. He remarked, “The International Criminal Court is an unlawful organization.” He accused the ICC of rendering itself illegal by claiming it can take action against individuals even if they are not members. This, he warned, could pose a risk of prosecution for U.S. military officials and political leaders abroad.
He stated, “In the future, this directly means that American servicemen, political leaders, and others could fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.” Rubio mentioned that Washington had previously sought reforms within the court, but after those efforts failed, the strategy shifted. “We have now begun to try to rein in that court,” he added.
According to Rubio, this initiative has already garnered international support. He noted, “Since we started this effort two weeks ago, dozens of countries have joined us. Five countries have already left the ICC and informed us of their departure, and we believe more will follow.”
The Secretary of State recently emphasized a ministerial meeting held in Washington, where representatives from 60 countries discussed politically motivated violence. Rubio stated, “Sixty countries came to Washington and participated in this effort where we addressed radical left terrorism and violence.” He expressed hope that the administration would form “a strong coalition” to confront such groups.
Meanwhile, President Trump clarified that the Secretary of State’s criticism of the ICC was not aimed at protecting him personally. Trump stated, “He is not trying to defend me. He is trying to defend Netanyahu and several others.” He further added, “At this time, there is no indication that I am one of them.”
