Imphal, August 11: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh honored silver medalist weightlifter Chanambam Rishikant Singh on Monday for his outstanding performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
While presenting the award, the Chief Minister congratulated Rishikant Singh and praised his remarkable achievement. He stated that this accomplishment has brought pride to both Manipur and the nation.
Khemchand highlighted the state’s commitment to enhancing incentives for medalists performing well in international and national competitions. He noted that many athletes who win medals come from low-income families. Despite facing economic hardships and other challenges, they strive to excel and bring honor to Manipur and the country.
The Chief Minister emphasized that dedication and hard work are essential to becoming a successful athlete. He also underscored Manipur’s rich tradition of supporting athletes through local clubs and community organizations. Such community-based support is not commonly seen in many other regions outside Manipur.
Khemchand remarked that the achievements of the state’s athletes reflect not only their individual talent and dedication but also the strong sports culture and community support developed over the years in Manipur.
During the conversation with the Chief Minister, Chanambam Rishikant Singh expressed deep gratitude for the encouragement and inspirational guidance received from the state government and the Chief Minister.
Rishikant secured the silver medal in the men’s 71 kg weightlifting category by lifting a total of 264 kg. Sharing his experience of winning the medal, Rishikant advised that athletes, especially those from low-income families, should not feel disheartened if they cannot afford the necessary diet for athletes. He stressed the need to change the mindset that success cannot be achieved without an expensive diet.
He stated that with determination, hard work, discipline, and dedication, athletes can overcome financial and other difficulties to achieve success at the highest levels. Rishikant expressed confidence that he would continue to work hard and aim for even greater successes and honors for Manipur and the nation in the future.
