Imphal, June 23: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stated on Tuesday that the state is a remarkable example of ‘unity in diversity,’ where 36 communities coexist harmoniously, contributing significantly to Indian sports.
During an event commemorating International Olympic Day, the Chief Minister highlighted that Manipur’s athletes have consistently brought honor to the nation. He emphasized that no Indian team participating in major international sports events can be deemed complete without the inclusion of players from Manipur.
Singh participated in the International Olympic Day Run and tree-planting event organized by the Manipur Olympic Association at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal.
While addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister remarked that Manipur is a place where 36 communities have lived together for decades. He reiterated that Indian teams are incomplete without the contributions of Manipur’s athletes, who have always elevated the country’s pride through their remarkable achievements.
He noted that in recognition of the state’s substantial contributions to Indian sports, the first National Sports University has been established in Manipur. The infrastructure for the university is nearly complete, and he recently inspected the campus.
Recalling his experiences as a taekwondo player, he mentioned that winning medals in prestigious international events like the Asian Games and the Olympics is vital, but the greatest lesson from sports is discipline.
He urged young athletes to respect their teachers and coaches, foster brotherhood above community divisions, and cultivate determination and dedication not only in sports but also in education and all aspects of life.
Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, who also oversees the Youth Affairs and Sports Department, stated that India is preparing to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The country is identifying and nurturing sports talent across various states and disciplines to achieve significant success in the Olympics.
He highlighted that despite its small population, Manipur has produced 19 Olympians, a remarkable achievement compared to many larger states. The minister also pointed out that the current sports equipment, most of which dates back to the 5th National Games in 1999, no longer meets today’s competitive standards.
He announced that the Chief Minister has committed to allocating ₹5 crore in the current financial year to purchase modern sports equipment to support athletes. Govindas Singh encouraged athletes to maintain discipline, stay away from substances, and strive to become healthy and responsible citizens.
During the event, the Chief Minister flagged off the ‘International Olympic Day Run’ and participated in a tree-planting campaign alongside other dignitaries.
The event was attended by several legislators, heads of sports organizations, senior officials, as well as representatives from associations, players, and athletes.
