Mumbai, March 22: Manchester United is preparing to file a formal complaint with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) regarding referee decisions during their Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth. The game, held at Vitality Stadium, ended in a 2-2 draw and has sparked controversy due to several contentious calls.
The match was marked by disputed decisions, including two penalties awarded and one appeal rejected. Manchester United expressed significant frustration over the officiating.
Defender Harry Maguire, recently recalled to the England squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 friendlies, faced a challenging match. In the dying moments, he pulled Ivanilson inside the penalty area, resulting in a red card. Bournemouth converted the resulting penalty, leveling the score.
However, United’s dissatisfaction primarily stemmed from an earlier decision when Amad Diallo was fouled inside the box, but the referee and VAR opted to let play continue. This decision was particularly controversial as United had previously been awarded a penalty for a similar foul in the early stages of the match, which captain Bruno Fernandes converted.
Michael Carrick voiced his frustration over the referee’s decisions, highlighting the inconsistency in ruling similar fouls differently.
According to the BBC, Carrick stated, “My first thought is that they certainly got one of those decisions wrong. They awarded a penalty for one incident but not for another, where a player was grabbed with both hands and fell, while controlling the ball.”
He added, “This was a massive moment in the match, and I don’t understand how you can award a penalty for one incident and not for another. It’s madness. It’s as clear as it can be. If you consider it a penalty the first time, it should be a penalty the second time as well. I don’t get why you can’t give it. Then a goal was scored, and chaos ensued. It’s astonishing.”
Reports indicate that United’s football director, Jason Wilcox, is expected to discuss these decisions with chief referee Howard Webb to seek clarity.
Meanwhile, Manchester United missed a crucial opportunity to strengthen their position in the Premier League standings. The former champions now sit third with 55 points from 31 matches, just four points ahead of Aston Villa, who have played one match less.
