
Kolkata, August 23: East Bengal FC has secured the title of the 135th Durand Cup by defeating their arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant with a score of 4-1 in the final. This victory marks East Bengal’s 17th title, equaling Mohun Bagan’s record of the same number of championships. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was present at the final match.
The final, held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, saw Edmund Lalrindika shine with a remarkable hat-trick, leading East Bengal to a long-awaited triumph after 22 years.
Rajnath Singh attended the match and congratulated East Bengal on social media platform X. He stated, “I witnessed the Durand Cup final in Kolkata today. I congratulate East Bengal Club for winning the cup. Their unwavering determination and excellent teamwork brought them victory and glory. Edmund Lalrindika’s hat-trick and the team’s outstanding performance marked a fantastic end to a 22-year wait. The true spirit of Indian football was on display in the final. Congratulations to the Red and Gold Brigade.”
Mohun Bagan initially controlled the ball, but East Bengal capitalized on their opportunities. In the 10th minute, captain Mohammad Basim Rashid delivered a brilliant pass to Bipin Singh, who scored the opening goal. Just two minutes later, Edmund Lalrindika struck from outside the box, extending the lead to 2-0.
In the 22nd minute, East Bengal crafted another excellent move. Edmund initiated the attack and showcased his skills by scoring, giving his team a strong 3-0 advantage.
Mohun Bagan attempted to bounce back in the 33rd minute with a goal from Manveer Singh, reducing the score to 3-1. However, just before halftime, in the 44th minute, Lalrindika completed his hat-trick, restoring East Bengal’s lead to 4-1.
In the second half, Mohun Bagan made several substitutions and pressed forward, but East Bengal’s solid defense denied them any chances. Ultimately, East Bengal celebrated a memorable 4-1 victory, claiming the Durand Cup 2026 title.
In individual awards, Mohun Bagan’s goalkeeper Vishal Kaith received the Golden Glove, NorthEast United FC’s Alaudin Azharai was awarded the Golden Boot, and East Bengal’s Edmund Lalrindika took home the Golden Ball. Each winner received a check of three lakh rupees, while Lalrindika also received the keys to an SUV.
