Mumbai, March 16: The Kalachowki police have arrested an individual for defrauding a victim of ₹37 lakhs by promising to secure a flat from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority. The accused lured the victim with the promise of a flat, only to abscond with the money.
According to police reports, the suspect, identified as Rupesh Sawant, hails from Bhirwande village in the Kankavali taluka. He approached the victim, posing as an agent for the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
The accused showed the victim a flat and claimed he could expedite its allocation. In exchange, he collected a total of ₹37 lakhs. However, he later sold the same flat to another individual. When the victim inquired about the flat, the accused promised another one and requested additional funds.
Investigations revealed that the actual owner of the second flat did not receive any money from the victim. The accused fled to his village after promising to return the funds.
The Kalachowki police tracked down the suspect in Bhirwande village and apprehended him. During the investigation, it was discovered that he had previously been involved in similar fraud cases at four different police stations. He has a history of multiple fraud allegations against him.
Police stated that the accused maintained the victim’s trust through repeated false promises, gradually siphoning off the entire amount. A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Authorities are currently interrogating the suspect, and the investigation is ongoing. The police have urged the public to thoroughly verify any agents before trusting them with flat or property transactions. They recommend checking the official website or office of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority for validation.
