Kolkata, August 11: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee encountered protests on Tuesday afternoon at the Shyambazar Five Point Crossing in North Kolkata. This demonstration occurred just two days after BJP workers protested her while she was visiting the family of a deceased Trinamool Congress worker in Kanchrapara, North 24 Parganas, who allegedly died in police custody.
The protesters chanted slogans such as “Thief” and “Go Back.” On Sunday, demonstrators had surrounded Banerjee’s car in Kanchrapara, throwing mud and a sandal at her while accusing her of being a “thief.”
On Tuesday, Banerjee was in Shyambazar to pay tribute to the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The atmosphere remained calm during her floral tribute.
After the ceremony, she accused the BJP of disrespecting Netaji and other great freedom fighters. As she was leaving, a group of BJP workers gathered and began chanting against her, creating a brief moment of tension. However, the large police presence quickly restored order, allowing Banerjee to depart safely.
A BJP supporter stated, “While the former Chief Minister was paying tribute to Netaji, we did not chant or protest. After that, we simply called her a thief. There is nothing wrong with that.”
On Monday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured that there would be no negligence regarding Banerjee’s security. He mentioned that if she informs the police about her tours in advance, appropriate security arrangements will be made.
