Mallikarjun Kharge Reflects on Change and Continuity in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, March 18: Several members of the Rajya Sabha are set to retire. Addressing these members and the house, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge remarked that time moves forward. Institutions remain, but the faces of the people change. He welcomed those returning for another term and acknowledged that those retiring will continue to contribute to public life. Their experiences will empower them to take on more meaningful roles in the future.

Kharge’s own term in the Rajya Sabha is also concluding. He stated, “I became a member of this house for the first time in my long parliamentary career and took on the role of Leader of the Opposition on February 16, 2022. As my first term comes to an end, the experiences I gained here have been extremely valuable. My time in the upper house has been a mix of challenges and rewards, but I believe new efforts are needed to make this house more effective in guiding the nation and society.”

During his address, Kharge specifically mentioned some retiring colleagues. He noted his long-standing relationship with H.D. Deve Gowda, who has held several significant positions, including Prime Minister. He expressed happiness that Sharad Pawar, a national leader, will continue to guide the house. Tiruchi Shiva, known for his deep understanding of parliamentary procedures, will also play a crucial role in the coming years. Ramdas Athawale is recognized for his unique poetic style and distinct presence in the house.

Kharge also acknowledged Congress leader Digvijay Singh, highlighting his significant contributions as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and his remarkable work in parliamentary committees. K.T.S. Tulsi enriched the house with his views on civil liberties and constitutional issues. Colleagues like Shakti Singh Gohil, Neeraj Dangi, Rajni Patil, Fauzia Khan, Priyanka Chaturvedi, and Saket Gokhale have all raised serious issues, enhancing the dignity of the house.

He praised Deputy Chairman Harivansh for his graceful and balanced demeanor. “People in politics or public life never truly retire. The spirit of serving the nation neither tires nor ends,” Kharge stated. He emphasized the opportunity to hear diverse perspectives from members representing various states and ideologies, which provides valuable learning experiences. Throughout his long public life, he has strived to regularly attend sessions, engage in discussions, and continue learning. Knowledge is never complete; it grows through constant reading, listening, and learning.

Kharge also urged that MPs should be given more time to discuss issues related to the poor, marginalized communities, farmers, and laborers in detail. He noted that sometimes when these issues are raised, they are perceived as criticism, while the government should seriously listen to public concerns. Even with limited time, MPs manage to convey important points, making it essential for them to have ample opportunity to enhance the dignity and effectiveness of the house.

He concluded by reciting a couplet for the retiring MPs: “Farewell is an old custom of the world, but wherever you go, leave a mark that everyone hums your tune.” He expressed that together, with a spirit of brotherhood, they will continue to work for the nation’s welfare.
