New Delhi, August 18: Congress leader Supriya Srinet has asserted that the BJP has made no contributions to the national flag, anthem, or song of the country. She responded to HD Kumaraswamy’s comments about Sonia Gandhi and expressed her views on the Vande Mataram controversy.
In an interview with a news agency, Srinet stated that there is no real controversy surrounding Vande Mataram; rather, there are two distinct perspectives. The first perspective follows Rabindranath Tagore’s advice, which was endorsed by prominent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Babu Rajendra Prasad. Tagore suggested adopting two stanzas, which became the national song under the Constitution in 1950.
She contrasted this with the ideology of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has been known to use pellet guns against protesting students. “For us, the choice is clear: do we follow Tagore’s advice or Shah’s approach?” she said. The Congress party will determine how the national song will be played at its events. She emphasized that no national symbol should be imposed on anyone, as the national song was meant to unite people, aligning with Tagore’s vision. “The BJP should not lecture us on patriotism when they have contributed nothing to our national flag, anthem, or song,” she added.
In response to BJP MP Kangana Ranaut‘s comparison of senior Congress leaders to Pakistan, Srinet remarked, “The BJP does not take seriously the person you are referring to. How should I respond to their questions? I pray for their health and suggest they consult a good doctor, as their condition seems to be deteriorating.”
Furthermore, Srinet countered Kumaraswamy’s comment about Sonia Gandhi having Italian blood, stating that the BJP engages in the lowest form of politics. “I see more Indianness in Sonia Gandhi than in any other woman. She has raised her children, Rahul and Priyanka, with a strong sense of patriotism,” she concluded.
