Malayalam New Year Begins with Chingam 1, Devotees Flock to Temples in Kerala

Kochi, August 17: The first day of the Malayalam calendar, marking the start of the Malayalam New Year (Chingam 1), commenced in Kerala on Monday.

Traditionally viewed as a month of hardship and sadness, ‘Karkidakam’ gives way to ‘Chingam,’ which brings a completely different atmosphere.

For generations, the first day of Chingam has been associated with hope, prosperity, and new beginnings, especially among the Hindu community in Kerala.

This day is significant as families traditionally visit temples to seek blessings for the upcoming year.

Many start their mornings with prayers and temple visits, while others seize this opportunity to launch new ventures or businesses, believing that Chingam 1 is an auspicious time to embark on new journeys.

During this period, the doors of the Sabarimala temple also open for monthly worship, attracting devotees to this hilltop shrine. Chingam also brings a delightful change in Kerala’s attire.

Women often step out in beautiful traditional Kerala sarees, while men typically prefer simple white dhotis, showcasing the essence of the celebration.

Though not mandatory, traditional attire has become a significant part of the day’s identity.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, known for his personal religious beliefs, was among those who celebrated this occasion by visiting a temple in Kochi, blending political and cultural significance into the first day of Chingam.

Chingam 1 is also important as it symbolizes the onset of Kerala’s largest festival, Onam.

The Malayalam month ‘Chingam’ is essentially another name for the Onam season. During this time, Kerala comes alive with Pookalam (rangoli), traditional feasts, cultural programs, and family gatherings.

This year, the main Onam celebrations will take place from August 25 to August 28, heightening the excitement surrounding this month.

From the sound of temple bells to the first flowers of the Onam season, Chingam signals a transformation in Kerala’s atmosphere. This change moves from the tranquility of Karkidakam to the vibrant colors and festivities ahead.

In a state where auspicious beginnings have long been held in high regard, the day of ‘Chingam 1’ is not just a turning of the calendar page; it promises a fresh start.
