Ranchi, August 17: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, urging him to personally meet with representatives of the student protesters to resolve the ongoing agitation in the state. Gandhi emphasized that direct dialogue between the Chief Minister and the students would strengthen the government’s commitment to addressing pending issues.
The letter, penned on August 14, was delivered to Chief Minister Soren by Kumar Raja, the president of the Ranchi Metropolitan Congress, late Sunday evening. It became public on Monday. In his correspondence, Gandhi stated that peaceful protest is a constitutional right and plays a crucial role in democracy.
He acknowledged the legitimacy of the students’ demands and urged the government to listen to them with sensitivity. Gandhi also praised the Jharkhand government for forming a committee to discuss the students’ concerns and initiate a dialogue process.
According to Gandhi, while several demands have been agreed upon during discussions, some students remain on an indefinite hunger strike. He stressed the need for a swift resolution to the situation and requested that the Chief Minister either visit the protest site or meet with the student delegation to hear their grievances.
Gandhi noted that the Chief Minister’s direct initiative would foster trust among the students and aid in resolving the remaining issues. He also criticized the central BJP government, alleging that the RSS and BJP have increased their influence over the country’s education system, using it to suppress students.
He asserted that the youth of the nation are its future, and it is essential to show solidarity with them during this crisis. Students in Jharkhand have been protesting for the past 24 days against irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations.
The protesters are demanding the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam and a CBI investigation into the alleged discrepancies in the recruitment process. Meanwhile, the state government has called the student delegation for talks again at 2 PM on Monday.
Previous discussions between the government and students had resulted in agreements on several demands related to exam reforms. The government has already announced the cancellation of the 14th JPSC civil service exam and backlog civil service exams.
However, a deadlock remains over the demands for the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam and the CBI investigation into alleged irregularities. Thus, Gandhi’s request for the Chief Minister to meet with the students is seen as significant amid the upcoming talks on Monday.
