New York, August 17: The world’s largest celebration of India’s independence, the India Day Parade, showcased the contributions of the Indian diaspora and the country’s diverse culture in this global city.
Honoring the spirit of unity and diversity of the world’s largest democracy, this year’s parade theme was “Heritage of Harmony.” Approximately 200,000 people participated, lining the streets and waving the tricolor along Madison Avenue.
Governor Kathy Hochul led the parade, expressing pride in celebrating the rich culture brought to New York by this vibrant community.
Actress Pooja Hegde and Adavi Shesh, as the chief guests, rode on floats, energizing the crowd of fans along the route.
This marked the 44th edition of the parade, organized annually by the Federation of Indian Associations. It has become the largest parade of its kind globally, with most participants joining spontaneously without any formal invitation.
Organizer Avinash Gupta stated, “This parade has grown bigger and better each year. It proudly showcases the contributions of the Indian diaspora not just in New York and America, but worldwide.”
This year’s event was particularly significant as it symbolized the 80th anniversary of India’s independence from Britain and the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, highlighting the shared history of both nations in their struggle against colonial rule.
The parade featured 36 floats representing India’s religious and cultural diversity, along with Indian-American businesses, media, and NGOs.
Performers showcased their talents along the parade route, while bands from the New York Police, schools, and cultural organizations infused the event with music ranging from Western marching tunes to Indian melodies. A music and dance program followed the parade.
