Major Shift in Indian Politics: Seven Former AAP Leaders Join BJP in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, April 27: A significant change has emerged in India’s parliamentary landscape. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat officially announced on Monday that seven former leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are now recognized as members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha.

Notably, Raghav Chadha and six other Rajya Sabha members decided to leave AAP and join the BJP. The Rajya Sabha has released an updated party position, reflecting the status of each party as of April 24, 2026. According to this list, the number of BJP members has risen to 113, while AAP’s representation has plummeted from 10 to just 3 members.

The list published by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat includes Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Raghav Chadha, Harbhajan Singh, Sandeep Kumar Pathak, Vikramjeet Singh Sahni, Swati Maliwal, and Rajinder Gupta as new BJP members. This increase strengthens the BJP’s position in the upper house.

The ‘Party Position’ document released by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat details the current strength of various parties. The BJP leads with 113 members, followed by the main opposition party, Congress, with 29 members. The Trinamool Congress has 13 members, while the DMK holds 8 seats in the upper house.

Additionally, the YSR Congress Party has 7 members, and the Biju Janata Dal has 6. The most significant change is AAP’s decline to just 3 members, which is seen as a major setback for the party. Other parties include AIADMK with 5 members, Janata Dal (United), Samajwadi Party, and Nationalist Congress Party each with 4 members.

Other parties represented include Rashtriya Janata Dal, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, CPI(M), and Jammu and Kashmir National Conference with 3 members each. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and CPI have 2 members each. Several smaller and regional parties also have representation, along with 3 independent members in the Rajya Sabha.

The number of nominated members stands at 7. This latest list from the Rajya Sabha presents a clear picture of the shifting political dynamics in the upper house. The inclusion of former AAP leaders in the BJP could significantly impact national politics and redefine the balance of power within Parliament.
