Five Patients Hospitalized After Cataract Surgery Complications in Jaipur

Jaipur, July 30: A troubling incident has emerged in Rajasthan amidst ongoing controversies surrounding maternity services. Five patients have been hospitalized at SMS Hospital in Jaipur after experiencing severe infections following cataract surgeries at a government hospital in Kuchaman City. This incident raises serious concerns about healthcare services in the region.

The patients were referred to SMS Hospital when their conditions worsened. Reports indicate that all five underwent cataract surgery on Tuesday. Within 24 hours post-surgery, they began showing alarming symptoms of infection, with their eyes turning white due to the complications.

Dr. Deepak Maheshwari, principal of SMS Medical College, stated that as soon as complications arose at the Kuchaman hospital, the patients were sent to SMS Hospital for specialized treatment.

In response to the severity of the situation, SMS Medical College quickly formed a high-level medical board to oversee the patients’ care. The board is chaired by Dr. Nagendra Singh Shekhawat, head of the ophthalmology department, and includes Dr. Mahendra Agarwal, head of the medicine department, along with senior ophthalmologists Dr. Manish Sharma and Dr. Pankaj Sharma.

Dr. Shekhawat confirmed that all patients are receiving treatment according to standard medical protocols. He noted that while their conditions are serious, every possible effort is being made to save their eyesight.

Among the infected patients are three women and two men, identified as Ghasiram (65), Heerararam (73), Gokul (70), Meera Devi (68), and Narayani (67). All had cataract surgeries at the Kuchaman City government hospital, and shortly after, they developed severe infections, leading to their referral for advanced treatment in Jaipur.

This incident comes at a time when the healthcare services in Rajasthan’s government hospitals are already under scrutiny. Following several recent allegations of medical negligence, this event has sparked new concerns regarding patient safety in public healthcare facilities.
