Major Drug Bust in Hyderabad: Police Uncover Inter-State Smuggling Network

Hyderabad, July 2: The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing has dismantled a significant inter-state drug trafficking network that was using postal and courier services to distribute cannabis across the country.

Police reported that the operation was initiated following the arrest of the main accused, Satyam Mishra. Initial investigations revealed that this network primarily operated from Jharkhand.

Satyam Mishra, a resident of Giridih district in Jharkhand, previously worked as a painter and a transport vehicle driver. His elder brother, Shubham Mishra, also known as ‘Shubham Dada’, along with Rahul Jha, known as ‘Chhote Mishra’ (a parcel booking and dispatch agent), Sachin Mishra (a relative coordinating the Mumbai network), and Santosh Pandit (another coordinator in Mumbai), are currently at large.

According to police, Satyam Mishra initially worked as a painter but later started driving commercial vehicles across various states, frequently traveling to Mumbai. In 2018, he developed a cannabis addiction, leading him to connect with local drug dealers. In pursuit of quick money, he partnered with his brother Shubham to launch an illegal cannabis business, eventually forming a well-organized syndicate with the involvement of Sachin, Rahul, and Santosh.

This syndicate cultivated cannabis in their native village and sourced it from unidentified local suppliers in Jharkhand. They then distributed the drug to clients in major cities, including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, reaching approximately 21 states.

To send illegal goods, they utilized the Isri Bazaar and Phusro Bazaar post offices in Jharkhand. To deceive postal officials during speed post bookings, the accused provided false information, claiming the parcels contained medicines. While Satyam and Shubham prepared and packed the goods, Rahul primarily handled the booking and dispatch. The gang used WhatsApp and other social media platforms to take orders, coordinate delivery locations, and process digital payments.

According to police, this syndicate fulfilled around 80 to 100 orders daily, sending 8 to 10 shipments via speed post each day. Each parcel typically contained between 50 to 250 grams of cannabis, sold to customers for prices ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 per order. This organized network reportedly generated daily earnings of approximately ₹100,000, translating to monthly revenues of ₹3 to ₹3.5 million and an annual turnover of around ₹40 to ₹50 million.

In addition to postal deliveries, the gang operated a substantial network in Mumbai, boasting over 1,000 regular customers. Shubham Mishra personally transported large quantities of cannabis from Jharkhand to Mumbai by train, storing it at the homes of Sachin Mishra and Santosh Pandit.

The activities of this syndicate came to light when police apprehended an individual in Hyderabad with a parcel of cannabis sent via the Isri Bazaar post office. Interrogation of the arrested individual revealed the supply chain.
