Major Drug and Gold Seizures at Mumbai Airport: Customs Department Takes Action

Mumbai, February 19: The Customs Department has conducted a significant operation at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. In just one week, multiple cases of drug and gold smuggling have been uncovered.

During the duty period from February 11 to February 17, 2026, officials from the Airport Commissionerate, Mumbai Customs Zone-III, apprehended several smuggling cases. The primary items seized included hydroponic weed, a type of narcotic substance, and illegal gold.

Based on spot checks and API profiling, a total of six cases were registered. In three of these cases, 9.581 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed was confiscated from three passengers arriving from Bangkok. The estimated market value of this seizure is approximately ₹9.581 crores. These passengers were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Similarly, in three other cases, a total of 1,336.62 grams of gold was seized, valued at around ₹1.85 crores. These cases were also identified through profiling, leading to the discovery of gold hidden by passengers.

Additionally, based on specific intelligence, three more cases were registered. In these instances, a total of 14.780 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed was seized from three passengers arriving from Bangkok, with an estimated market value of ₹14.780 crores. These individuals were also arrested under the provisions of the NDPS Act.

In recent months, there has been a surge in the smuggling of hydroponic weed, particularly on flights from Thailand. Authorities have stated that they are increasing surveillance efforts to thwart such attempts.

The Customs Department has urged passengers to comply with the law and refrain from bringing any illegal items. Strict actions against smuggling cases will continue.
