Mumbai, May 23: A significant demolition campaign conducted by Western Railway near Bandra railway station has come to a successful conclusion. The operation, which lasted five days, targeted illegal shanties and constructions in the impoverished Nagar area. On Saturday, debris removal commenced following the demolitions.
According to Western Railway officials, all unauthorized structures were dismantled during this operation. However, around 100 authorized ground-floor homes were left untouched for safety reasons, while illegal upper structures were removed.
The campaign was not without its challenges. Tensions escalated when the demolition of a local religious structure began, prompting angry residents to stone the railway and administrative teams in protest. Police had to intervene with a baton charge to control the situation, resulting in injuries to several officers and locals. Fortunately, the heavy police presence and strict security measures prevented further escalation.
Railway officials reported that aside from the stone-throwing incident, the entire operation was completed peacefully. Vinit Abhishek, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, confirmed that the demolition work is now 100% complete, with debris removal progressing rapidly. To prevent future encroachments, a security wall is also being constructed in the area.
With the land now cleared, the Bandra station vicinity appears more open, facilitating easier movement for passengers. Western Railway is planning significant infrastructure upgrades to enhance passenger convenience.
Officials stated that the new layout will improve entry and exit points at the station, alleviating congestion for travelers. The area will also be developed with future needs in mind.
This land is strategically important for the railway. Officials noted that with the removal of long-standing encroachments, it will be easier to expand railway lines and introduce new train services.
Plans include developing the fifth and sixth railway lines between Santacruz and Mumbai Central, which will separate local and long-distance train operations, significantly improving punctuality for local trains.
Railway officials indicated that the cleared land will enhance connectivity between Bandra Terminus and Bandra suburban station, paving the way for approximately 50 new long-distance trains in the future.
Additionally, this area is close to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), where several major projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train station, are underway. Thus, this demolition drive is deemed crucial for improving Mumbai’s traffic management and railway infrastructure.
