Major Cyber Scam Uncovered in Muzaffarpur: Three Arrested in Digital Arrest Scheme

Muzaffarpur, May 1: In a significant breakthrough against cybercrime, the Muzaffarpur Cyber Police Station has dismantled an organized gang involved in defrauding victims through a so-called ‘Digital Arrest’ scam.

The operation was initiated following a written complaint from a senior citizen who was threatened and coerced into transferring ₹1.7 million.

The victim, 73-year-old Bhola Prasad Mahto from Mushahari, reported receiving multiple video calls from individuals impersonating police and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers starting April 5, 2026.

The scammers allegedly intimidated him with threats of a ‘Digital Arrest,’ causing him mental distress. Under pressure, the victim transferred ₹1.7 million on April 10 to an account belonging to one Brajesh Kumar at a Federal Bank branch in Bhagwanpur via RTGS.

It wasn’t until April 13 that he realized he had been defrauded, prompting him to alert his bank and the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930).

Taking the complaint seriously, the police registered case number 58/26 and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the guidance of senior officials.

Through technical surveillance, call detail analysis, and examination of bank transactions, three suspects were arrested. They have been identified as Brajesh Kumar, Krishna Kumar, and Vikram Kumar.

These arrests mark a crucial step in combating new techniques of cyber fraud. During the operation, police seized mobile phones, checkbooks, passbooks, and debit cards from the suspects.

Initial investigations revealed that the bank accounts used in this case were linked to numerous cyber fraud incidents across the country, indicating a broader network.

Authorities suspect that this gang operates at an interstate level, targeting victims with innovative tactics like ‘Digital Arrest.’

Raids are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang. Officials have urged citizens to remain vigilant and cautious, advising them not to trust unsolicited phone or video calls from individuals claiming to be police, CBI, or other officials.
