Muzaffarpur, May 1: In a significant breakthrough against cybercrime, the Cyber Police Station in Muzaffarpur has dismantled an organized gang that defrauded victims through a so-called ‘Digital Arrest’ scam.
This operation was initiated following a written complaint from a senior citizen who was threatened and coerced into transferring ₹1.7 million.
The victim, 73-year-old Bhola Prasad Mahto from Mushari, reported receiving multiple video calls from individuals impersonating police and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials starting April 5, 2026.
The scammers allegedly intimidated him with threats of a ‘Digital Arrest,’ causing him considerable mental distress. Under pressure, the victim transferred ₹1.7 million to an account belonging to Brajesh Kumar at a Federal Bank branch in Bhagwanpur via RTGS on April 10.
On April 13, he realized he had been defrauded and promptly alerted his bank and the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930).
Taking the complaint seriously, the police registered case number 58/26 and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the guidance of senior officials.
Through technical surveillance, call detail analysis, and examination of bank transactions, three suspects were apprehended. They have been identified as Brajesh Kumar, Krishna Kumar, and Vikram Kumar.
These arrests mark a crucial step in combating new techniques of cyber fraud. During the operation, police seized mobile phones, checkbooks, passbooks, and debit cards from the suspects.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the bank accounts used in this case were linked to numerous cyber fraud incidents across the country, indicating a widespread network.
Authorities suspect that this gang operates at an interstate level, targeting victims using innovative tactics like ‘Digital Arrest.’ Raids to capture the absconding members are ongoing.
Officials urge citizens to remain vigilant and cautious. People are advised not to trust unsolicited phone calls or video calls from individuals claiming to be police, CBI, or other officials.
