Amritsar, August 5: A significant attempt at foreign currency smuggling was thwarted at Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport in Amritsar. During a security check, CISF personnel discovered $31,500 concealed in a passenger’s undergarments. This amount is approximately equivalent to 30 lakh Indian Rupees.
The incident occurred on Monday when the passenger was undergoing security screening for international travel. CISF officers noticed suspicious behavior during the screening process. Upon further investigation, they found a substantial amount of foreign currency hidden in the passenger’s clothing. Thanks to the vigilance and professional skills of the officers, this smuggling attempt was intercepted at an early stage.
A CISF official stated that after counting and verifying the recovered U.S. dollars, the passenger was questioned. However, he could not provide any valid documents or permits for carrying such a large sum. According to RBI and customs regulations, necessary declarations and documentation are mandatory for transporting foreign currency. Upon discovering the violation of these rules, CISF initiated immediate action.
The passenger and the seized $31,500 were handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for further investigation and legal action. DRI is now working to determine the destination of the funds, the individuals involved, and the source of the money. Authorities suspect that this case may be linked to hawala or other illegal transactions.
CISF emphasized that modern equipment and intelligence-based monitoring are employed for the inspection of passengers and luggage at Amritsar Airport. Officers receive regular training on new smuggling techniques, which enabled them to detect currency hidden in unconventional places like undergarments.
