New Delhi, April 4: The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a government “Maharatna” company, has played a crucial role in the construction of INS Taragiri. This vessel is the fourth stealth frigate built under Project 17A and was recently commissioned into the Indian Navy.
Weighing 6,670 tons, the warship was commissioned in Visakhapatnam in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
The ship was designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. It is equipped for multi-role operations and incorporates advanced stealth technology.
According to SAIL, the company supplied approximately 4,000 tons of special-grade steel plates used in the construction of this warship. This steel was produced at SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela plants, showcasing the company’s capability to manufacture high-end defense-grade materials.
INS Taragiri features over 75% indigenous content, including advanced systems such as radar, sonar, and missile systems, which include BrahMos missiles and surface-to-air missiles, enhancing its combat and maritime security capabilities.
During the commissioning ceremony, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh described the ship as a symbol of India’s growing technological strength and self-reliance in the defense sector. He emphasized that most of India’s trade and energy security relies on maritime routes, making a robust naval capability essential.
This warship can operate at high speeds in the ocean for extended periods and is capable of executing various missions, including high-intensity combat, anti-piracy operations, coastal surveillance, and humanitarian assistance.
SAIL has previously supplied special steel for INS Vikrant and other ships under Project 17A. The commissioning of INS Taragiri is seen as a significant step towards strengthening India’s self-reliance and maritime power in the defense sector.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, SAIL’s shares closed down nearly 1% at ₹154.40 on the NSE. The company’s 52-week high is ₹168.21, and the low is ₹101.13, with a market capitalization of ₹64,070 crores.
