Ranchi, August 3: The notorious gangster Sujit Sinha was killed in a police encounter late Sunday night in Jamtara, marking the end of a significant chapter in organized crime that has plagued Jharkhand for over two decades. Accused in more than 75 cases, including murder, extortion, and kidnapping, Sinha had long been a symbol of terror across various districts, including Koylanchal and Palamu.
Despite serving a life sentence for a high-profile double murder in Palamu, Sujit Sinha continued to operate his gang from prison. On Sunday evening, he was being transferred from Sahibganj District Jail to Dhanbad District Jail. During transit, the vehicle carrying him experienced a flat tire on the Sahibganj-Govindpur National Highway, between Supaidi and Kendabona, while the process of moving him to another vehicle was underway.
According to police claims, Sinha seized a weapon from an officer and opened fire while attempting to escape. In the ensuing exchange, he was severely injured and later succumbed to his wounds. As news of the incident spread on Monday morning, a large crowd gathered at the scene. Jamtara police cordoned off the area to collect forensic evidence.
A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) gathered evidence from the site, while senior police officials inspected the scene to gather details about the incident. The police conducted a scientific examination of the location and documented all aspects related to the event. Sinha’s body was sent for autopsy in the morning.
Police officials stated that the autopsy is being conducted by a board of doctors in accordance with the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the entire process is being recorded on video. A magistrate’s inquiry into the encounter has also commenced. Sujit Sinha, a resident of Medininagar (Palamu), initially rose to infamy as a shooter for the notorious don Sushil Srivastava from Hazaribagh. He later formed his own gang, extending his extortion network across Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Ranchi, Palamu, Latehar, Chatra, and other districts.
According to police records, his gang was infamous for extorting money from coal traders, railway contractors, builders, and other businessmen. Investigative agencies revealed that Sinha continued to manage his gang from prison using mobile phones and his associates.
Authorities claim that his wife, Riya Sinha, along with other accomplices, played an active role in managing the funds obtained from extortion and operating the network. In recent months, police have arrested several individuals linked to the gang and have seized weapons and other incriminating materials. Investigations also revealed that Sinha’s network was connected to the gang of fugitive gangster Prince Khan from Dhanbad.
Police and central agencies are investigating alleged hawala networks, extortion syndicates operating from abroad, and the supply of modern weapons. Following Sujit Sinha’s encounter, Jharkhand police have issued alerts in Dhanbad, Ranchi, Palamu, Ramgarh, Jamtara, and other sensitive districts.
Authorities are concerned that remaining members of his gang or rival gangs may become active. In response, intelligence operations have been intensified.
