New York, September 3: Carlos Alcaraz has secured his place in the third round of the 2026 US Open men’s singles. The Spanish player, aiming for his third US Open title, defeated Jaime Faria to advance. Alcaraz’s victory is particularly significant as he lost the first set.
In a match held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Alcaraz triumphed over Faria with scores of 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, and 6-2. After a four-month break due to a wrist injury, the third-seeded Alcaraz showcased his dominance on the court by overcoming the 72nd-ranked Portuguese player.
Faria drew attention by winning the first set 6-4. Following a rollercoaster first set, Alcaraz saved a break point in his opening service game of the second set and then won eight consecutive games, claiming the set 6-0. In the third set, Alcaraz continued his momentum, winning another eight games and breaking Faria’s serve five times to take the set 6-3. He then finished strong, winning the fourth set 6-2. This victory marks Alcaraz’s 26th main draw win at the American Slam, the highest in his career across all four majors.
Alcaraz is attempting to become the first player since Roger Federer, who won five consecutive titles from 2004 to 2008, to defend the US Open title. A member of the ATP number one club, Alcaraz is a two-time champion in New York, having won the US Open in 2022 and 2025. He is also the youngest player to complete a Grand Slam.
Next, Alcaraz will face China’s Wu Yibing, who defeated James Duckworth with scores of 7-5, 6-3, and 6-1.
