New Delhi, August 22: Last week, the Union Home Minister announced the complete dismantling of the Shahzad Bhatti network, which was recruiting youth for terrorism-related activities via social media.
This crackdown has caused chaos within the network, leading to a significant decline in its activities since the announcement.
The Home Minister revealed that ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, Indian agencies uncovered several modules of this network and arrested over 200 individuals.
An officer from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) stated that this operation has dealt a severe blow to the morale of the Bhatti network. It was the largest operation linked to this ISI-supported network in recent years, aimed at establishing a vast network across the country.
According to the officer, youth were lured with promises of fame, weapons, and small sums of money. They were instructed to engage in activities such as installing CCTV cameras in crowded places, carrying out contract killings, trafficking small quantities of drugs, and other criminal acts.
The officer noted that Bhatti had been enticing youth with dreams of power and fame, and this strategy had been successful for several months. However, Indian agencies have now exposed the network, causing significant damage to both Bhatti and the ISI.
He mentioned that Bhatti was gradually expanding his network, intending to set up hundreds of small modules nationwide. Another officer indicated that Bhatti and the ISI might attempt to resume activities in the future, but the situation will not be the same. The morale of the network has been greatly affected by the actions of Indian agencies.
Officials stated that when the network was active, Bhatti and his associates could reach a large number of youths, receiving positive responses. Now, online activities have slowed considerably. Many young people are questioning the network’s objectives and rejecting its offers.
According to officials, breaking the morale of the Bhatti network and raising awareness among youth has been a significant success for the agencies.
The officer reported that Bhatti is trying to discredit the actions of Indian agencies, claiming that all 3,000 youths he recruited are still with him and that the government has presented false figures.
He also questioned whether those arrested were genuinely part of his network, as claimed by Indian agencies.
Officials anticipated such a response from Bhatti. He is attempting to appear strong in front of his supporters and present an alternative narrative, realizing that the recruitment process will no longer be as easy. This marks a significant defeat for him, and he is trying to manage the situation while creating an environment that encourages youth to trust him and not fear joining his network.
Officials have stated that in addition to investigating and dismantling major modules, agencies are also raising awareness about the dangers of joining such networks among the youth.
