Kolkata, August 22: Police in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district conducted a raid on Saturday at the residence of a local leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), uncovering a significant cache of weapons and ammunition.
According to police officials, the seizure took place at the home of Papai Ghosh, the municipal president of the TMC’s youth wing in Baharampur. Authorities noted that Ghosh has a history of legal troubles, including a case related to gang violence filed against him in 2017.
Following a recent change in power after the West Bengal Assembly elections, Ghosh had been evading arrest. Earlier this month, he surrendered to a district court in Murshidabad and was subsequently arrested by police on August 14.
During questioning in police custody, Ghosh allegedly revealed that he had hidden a large quantity of weapons and ammunition at his home. This led to the police raid, where they recovered an arsenal that included seven firearms, five magazines, and 186 live cartridges.
The recovered weapons comprised two 9mm pistols, three 7.65mm pistols, and two single-shot pipe guns.
In a related operation, police from the Shaktipur police station in Murshidabad arrested two individuals on the same day, seizing three firearms, six magazines, and 40 live cartridges from them.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Jabbar Mandal and Alamgir Sheikh. Police are interrogating them to determine why they were transporting such a large quantity of weapons and who the intended recipient was.
Authorities stated that their campaign against illegal arms in the state is ongoing, with intensified actions in sensitive areas, particularly in Malda, Murshidabad, and regions along the India-Bangladesh border.
