BJP Criticizes Jharkhand Government for Student Protests and Police Brutality

Ranchi, August 22: Former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Champai Soren has condemned the Jharkhand government’s handling of protests by students qualified for the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC). These protests escalated into violence and police action.

Soren stated that the BJP, as the opposition, will not allow the state government to act with tyranny. He warned that if students face oppression, widespread protests could erupt, potentially leading to civil unrest.

The student movement, which has been ongoing due to irregularities in the JPSC and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) recruitment exams, turned confrontational on Friday in Ranchi, Giridih, and Hazaribagh. Students attempted to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, leading to clashes with supporters of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

In an interview with a news agency, BJP MLA Champai Soren urged the government to refrain from such actions, warning that protests would escalate and conditions could resemble a civil war. He praised the discipline shown by the students, noting that despite having the means to retaliate, they chose restraint.

Soren highlighted that the students maintained their composure, contrasting this with the actions of others who were forcibly brought in with flags to attack the students. He emphasized that this struggle is not political but a fight for employment, describing it as a non-political struggle.

He asserted that the BJP will not remain silent if students continue to be oppressed. The increasing tyranny of the Jharkhand government is concerning, and he questioned the need to cancel the JPSC exams, accusing the government of deceiving students and selling job opportunities.
